The Norfolk Hospice Hold Up 2013

28th February 2013

THE NORFOLK HOSPICE HOLD UP

About 6 years ago I was arrested whilst on air at KL.FM in aid of Norfolk Hospice Tapping House and today unbeknown to me it was to happen again.  I have to admit it was strange being asked to take Supertrooper Bear to work on the bus, but because I thought it would be fun, I agreed.

 Norfolk Hospice

On arrival at King’s Lynn Bus Station I was greeted by the police and a host of others who had been arrested in the name of charity that morning too. See the actual moment Super Trooper’s criminal past caught up with him in the video below...

Among the faces were the guys from Maze Media, All Signs, Lynnsport Bodyworks, King’s Lynn Corn Exchange, and Glebe House School andSystem Three Business Solutions.

Norfolk Hospice

It was all very real, Supertrooper and I had our mug shots taken and were also finger printed at the old Gaol House before he was locked away and I was placed in the stocks. Norfolk HospiceThe only thing I was allowed to do was make phone calls and lots of them to find enough money to ensure our freedom.  I’d like to say a Massive “thank you’” to the following amazing people and business in West Norfolk.

New bins please!

24th February 2013

By now you may already have an addition to your bin family, the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk are currently introducing new 'Food Waste' bins to households in our area.

Starting April 2nd your bin collections will change ever so slightly, meaning that your black bin (which is going to be replaced by a larger black bin) will be collected on alternate weeks to your green recycling bin, so black bin one week, then green bin the next week.  The new grey bin, with the food waste in , will be collected EVERY week.

To understand how it all works and to see the benefits, my family and I were lucky enough to be chosen as the first in the area to give it a go, you can watch our blogs below to see how we get on.

Pre Tour of the Towns Tour of the Towns and Villages: Day 4

15th February 2013

Day 4 of the Tour of the Towns Pre Tour of the Towns and Villages 2013, and this afternoon my Land Rover Freelander 2 took me to Fakenham.

PTOTTOTTAV PIC 8

These are the guys at Langham Glass, where they taught me how to blow glass - it was hot and tiring work, and especially hard for me as I'm the world's smallest radio presenter, and I have the lung capacity to match!

However, Paul, John, Andrew and Ian still managed to help me make a lovely glass bubble, as you can see below.

Langham Glass recently moved, and they told me about their official re-opening on Monday 21st, where they're having a family fun week over the half term week, find out more at https://www.facebook.com/#!/LanghamGlassLtd?fref=ts .

My next stop in Fakenham was meeting Kevin in Specsavers, and then on to see the girls at Fakenham Florists, where I shared with them a few secrets about what flowers women like for Valentines day.

Mart 2013

14th February 2013

The King's Lynn Mart has rolled into town for 2013.  For the next two weeks the Tuesday Market Placee will be alive with all the fun of the fair, and as you'll see below it's not just for kids.  Pictured amongst others, The High Sherriff, MP Henry Bellingham (who looks absolutly petrified) and the Mayor of King's Lynn & West Norfolk.

Pre Tour of the Towns Tour of the Towns and Villages: Day 3

13th February 2013

We fought against plummetting temperatures and harsh winds today, to take us to the lovely town of Downham Market, where they shared with us the things they will be giving up for lent.

Our first port of call was the local butchers, where we wandered into Richard Gill Traditional Butchers on the High Street in Downham.

Pre Tour of the Towns Tour of the Towns and Villages 2013: Day 2 (Pancake Day)

12th February 2013

lemonaid logo

Today, Jamie De Bootman and I went back out on the road in our Freelander 2, and raised awareness of our latest appeal, LemonAid, after it was revealed that a shortage of lemons in West Norfolk was preventing people from fully enjoying their pancakes.

Here at KL.FM, we understand that, and so we hit the road for Syderstone, where - our researchers tell us - the epedemic of the lemon shortage is rife.

Here is the series of videos which covered our fantastic (but chilly!) day out in West Norfolk!

What a fantastic day we had, sharing the LemonAid with our local area, informaing them of the lemon shortage.

Some fantastic video footage of our encounters with the people who helped us to spread the word of the lemon-tastrophy, with us leaving a sweet (well, sour) taste in their mouths.

After saving the people of West Norfolk from a "Lemonless" Pancake Day i was greeted by Adam Newstead at KL.FM who spat on me!

See why?

Pre 'Tour of the Towns' Tour of the Towns and Villages: Day 1

11th February 2013

Today, I took Jamie De Bootman from our travel cupboard, out in our brand new Land Rover Freelander 2 from Hunters Land Rover in King’s Lynn, for KLFM’s Pre Tour of The Towns Tour of The Towns and Villages Tour 2013 (try saying that in a hurry!).

PRE TOUR OF TOWNS PIC DAY 1

This morning, we were out and about near the Emneth and Wisbech area, which included stops at Maipop Farm Butchers (where I fed a grown man, who was covered in mud, a shortcake biscuit), Lakeside Hotel in Walsoken (where we found the best place to watch  football  a TV even bigger than me!), Emneth Angling shop (where we met Mick, a retired firefighter from West Walton), and JPL Motors in Emneth, before we decided that we’d had enough of the cold and headed for the pub.

While we were in the Gaultree Inn, we met the landlady, Julia, where she introduced us to her regulars. The first of which was Mick, who we’d already met at the Angling shop, but the second was a man known only by his friends as “Spanish Chris”. Sitting with a pint of Magners in his hand, the topic arose of the Pope having resigned from his job today. Spanish Chris had some strong opinions on this; listen to what he had to say here:

We then drove slightly further along, where we stopped at ‘Perfect Choice’ in Upwell, where we met Diane and Tara, working hard making soft furnishings while listening to a familiar radio station in the background :-)

After meeting those ladies, we made our way further into Upwell, where we stumbled upon a van with a sign “Joe’s Nose Bag”. Ever intrigued, we made our way into the shop which boasted the same name as that on the van. It turned out to be a real gem; a tiny bakery, smelling of goodness – a real find for two hungry, young, attractive blokes! Especially as they asked me to help them tune their radio to the most listened to radio station in West Norfolk (KLFM, if you were wondering).

Much like the Pope, Joe told us that she had also resigned from a job in the past; hear about how she resigned here:

And so, with a pair of muffins, we finally set sail back to the studio in our Land Rover.

A Day at Springwood High - King's Lynn

7th February 2013

Today my Managing Director & I (he's the bald one) visited Springwood High's Opportunity Fair for year nine students to talk about a career in radio. It was a great morning and we met some fantastic students, a few of which, who knows, you may hear on KL.FM 96.7 one day in the future?

Macmillan Centre and your donations

5th February 2013

In January 2012 on Home-Time listeners to the show helped raise £2500 for new chemotherapy chairs at the Macmillan Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.  Thanks to you it meant they would be able to treat more cancer patients, more often, with vital treatment for their condition. These chairs were not acquired immediately as the Mac Centre was due for a refurbish, a refurbish that I'm pleased to say was recently completed. As of Monday this week the treatment rooms and waiting area are once again open to patients.

Today I took myself to meet head nurse Beverly Perryman to see the unit and the chairs that you paid for!

Thanks.QEH

Help needed after fire!

3rd February 2013

Over the weekend I recieved the following email, are you able to help this family after the fire in any way? You can contact me via simon.rowe@klfm967.co.uk

Before you read the email, have a listen to a neighbour of the family describe how her children ran in to the burning house in an act of amazing bravery.

Hi Si,

During the early hours of this morning my wife's daughter Lousia, her boyfriend and her disabled daughter were woken due to a fire which started in the kitchen. This happened inDownham Market. Luckily nobody was seriously injured although Robert has beenadmitted into the QEH due to smoke inhalation. He will be ok. It was thought a 3 month old puppy was lost in the fire but was found some time later behind a sofa nested in the smallest of spaces. He is a very lucky puppy.

What wasn't lost to the flame has been lost due to smoke damage. That's everything apart from the clothes they ran out into the street in. As of this moment they don't have a roofover their heads for tonight but with crossed fingers the housing association will help.Three fire tenders were there and to them we are very grateful. The Red Cross have made contact too.

If any of your listeners have anything they could donate I'm sure it will be welcome especially for the little girl.

Regards

Mark

3rd February 2013

Can you help find a missing Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever dog?

Harvey was bred in Norfolk and lives in Norfolk so he needs local people to help bring him home.  Harvey could be anywhere in the Norfolk by now, please watch the video below to see him and just how missed he is.

Alison Wallington the distraught owner has arranged a search this weekend and needs as many volunteers as possible to help cover specific areas, post flyers to continue to spread the word. Any help at all is desperately needed, and gratefully accepted.

Alison can be contacted on 07880 369728.
