The Lord Nelson

![]()
The Lord Nelson is situated in Nelson's Birthplace, Burnham Thorpe. Built in 1637 as an Ale House.
Visit the pub today and you can soak up the atmosphere that has changed little over the past 372 years. The pub has no bar and your drinks are served from a tap room with a range of real ales served straight from the cask.
When Nelson was without a command from November 1786 to February 1793, he returned to Burnham Thorpe with his new wife, Fanny, and stepson to stay with his father in the Parsonage.
During this period, he spent many hours in the pub which, no doubt, helped him compose his letters of protest to the Admiralty at his lack of a ship.
You can even sit on the same high backed settle where Nelson used to sit!

Review
It's not just great food you get here - but a bit of a history lesson too. The most obvious thing that sets the Lord Nelson in Burnham Thorpe apart from all the other North Norfolk foody pubs - is Lord Nelson himself.
It was the local of Norfolk's most famous son and that's evident throughout. It's pretty difficult to find a spot that doesn't have some memorabilia somewhere nearby. But that's what adds to the charm, when we arrived we really felt like we were stepping back in time. It's a proper pub - with table to sit and drink at, snugs, log fires - the lot. Our table was even next to a huge mural depicting the battle of the Nile.
It tries hard to stay like a proper pub - and I think it succeeds, it hasn't gone all ‘gastro' but the food is fantastic. Alongside the Smoked Duck salad Alix had, and the game terrines I wolfed down - there's also soup of the day, wild mushrooms on toast and Brancaster Mussels.
Game did seem to be the order of the day - it is deepest darkest autumn in Norfolk after all - so Alix tried the game stew for her main. It really was exactly what you want on a cold wintry night - filling, warm and gamey. I thought I'd be local too - with the supreme of Norfolk Chicken with a wild mushroom sauce - it was delicious.
We'd had our eyes on pudding before we even chose our starters, so barely needed to even look at the menu onced we'd eaten our mains. It was a great little crème brulee for me - while Alix kept to the comfort food - with Bread and Butter pudding and custard.
The food really is the icing on the cake with this pub, it's got a great atmosphere, is in a fab location and a wonderful building. And their wine list looks incredible - sadly the fact it was a week night meant we didn't indulge - but have a listen to my chat with Landlord Simon Alper to find out more...

The Canary and Linnet
Tim's Review
You'd think we'd have found the Canary and Linnet straight away - what with it being right on the A47 between Swaffham and Dereham. But with Alix's ‘let's take the scenic route from King's Lynn' approach, we arrived rather frazzled, a little bit late for our dinner, and knowing a lot more about Gressenhall than we did before.
But the pub's rustic charms worked their magic immediately. An imminent lovers tiff was instantly diffused by the warm welcome and cosy surroundings. A quick look at the menu to see pork belly and deep fried brie calmed us both down even more.
After a drink in the cosy bar - with the fabulously fluffy ginger cat as company - we went through to the restaurant, where we tucked in to the brie and pork starters. Both were chosen from the specials board, which changes daily.
Once we'd polished those off - it was straight on to liver and bacon for me, while Alix took full advantage of the local game with a whole partridge.
Despite being pretty full the homemade desserts were just too tempting - it was an incredibly creamy and crunchy crème brulee for Alix, while I tried to be healthy with the fruit salad. The fact it came with pavlova and whipped cream probably added a few more calories though!
I spoke to Rachel after our meal, have a listen to what he had to say below.
