25% of the calls to Norfolk Police are mental health related.

That's according to our Police and Crime Commissioner Stephen Bett who's now putting 3 extra mental health nurses into the control room.

It’s been so successful that we’ve now added another 3 people that go on a rota. So we can now deal with all mental health issues using mental health staff rather than deal with it within the police

A pilot scheme with one nurse was soon snowed under with requests for help. The nurses have access to medical records so can call mental health crisis teams out to assess the situation, often preventing the situation from escalating and stopping the person being arrested.

“It’s been so successful that we’ve now added another 3 people that go on a rota. So we can now deal with all mental health issues using mental health staff rather than deal with it within the police.”

This new announcement comes on World Mental Health Day.

Mr Bett says other police forces should be following our lead:

“I think it’s a real goer and it saves a huge amount of money and time and effort. With resources the way they are I think it’s a big way forward.”
