Child Exploitation In Norfolk "Does Happen"
8:25am 21st November 2014
A child sexual abuse scandal on the scale of Rotherham or Rochdale couldn't happen here in Norfolk.
That's the opinion of the Chair of the Children Safeguarding Board for the County.
“No I don’t think so. I think we’ve got robust and effective ways of identifying children who may be at risk and responding to them. That isn’t to say it doesn’t happen in Norfolk. It does. But I think I can be confident that we don’t have issues of the scale that have hit the news in places like Rotherham”
David Ashcroft was speaking to KLFM after more criticism of agencies across the UK by Ofsted. The inspectors say in many places, people like the Councils and Police are not working together.
He said that further education and awareness are the key to fighting the issue.
“Sexual Exploitation unfortunately does happen but what we need as a society and as agencies is to be alert to this and to be ready to respond. We also need to help young people to look after and protect themselves by letting them know who they can turn to and where they can get help.”
