Southgates Plans Revealed
The latest redevelopment of the Southgates roundabout has started.
The pictures below are still officially a 'design proposal' but show the basic ideas that the Highways team want to introduce.
The entrances from Hardwick Road and Nar Ouse Way will be widened and have traffic lights.
And it'll all be moved slightly to the south (into the Lorry Park) and made a bit bigger.
Workstarted in February and will then continue until August.
Following a slight delay in completing street lighting works, footway surfacing will now be
finished next week and all works are due to completed by Friday 27th August.
All new street lighting columns are now installed and connected, and footway surfacing
will resume next using off-peak lane closures to finish the scheme along with signs,
bollards and the like. Works are due to be substantially finished by Friday 20th August.
The new traffic signals on the roundabout and at Hardwick Road were successfully commissioned this week and are now in use.
Fine tuning continues to ensure their timings are set to give the best performance for everyone using the roundabout.

The closure last weekend proved very successful, with nearly all the surfacing completed
plus a large part of the roadmarkings, and repairs to the Southgates Arch enabling the
roundabout to be reopened safely on Monday morning despite the burst water main on
Wisbech Road

Nearly all drainage, cables, ducts and pipework beneath the ground have been laid, diversions of utility cables and pipes are nearing completion, new road formations are nearly done and now the first layers of surfacing are being laid on the widened Hardwick.

Works continue to programme at Southgates roundabout in King’s Lynn, having got off to a good start last week. Surfacing around the now smaller central island has allowed an extra lane for traffic to use while works continue around the junction. All splitter islands have now been broken out and reinstated with surfacing, and pedestrian refuges are being be formed using barriers to allow people to cross and give flexibility. Street lighting on the central island is now in use.
Works have begun to improve Southgates roundabout at King’s Lynn. The official start date was Monday 1st February, but preparatory works began on the day before to help get the scheme off to a good start. This helped reduce traffic congestion on the Monday.
Works done in the first week include temporarily reducing the size of the central island by 3m to allow room for traffic as the works progress. This is due to be surfaced on Sunday. Street lights, bollards and signs on the splitter islands on all approach roads to the roundabout have been removed. The islands are now being broken out and reinstated with surfacing, and pedestrian refuges will be formed using barriers to allow people to cross and give flexibility. Temporary street lights have been fitted to the central island.
