Helping to save more lives in Downham Market.

The new £1mill fire station was officially opened last night (16th May) after the old one burnt down three years ago.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue also now have greater training facilities at the base.

We spoke to Station Manager Clive Wells at the big launch.

Fire crews are now working alongside their colleagues in Norfolk Police as part of their joint base for blue light emergency services.

The majority of costs were covered by the insurance but Norfolk County Council also invested £500,000 to help with the improvements.

That meant the new station could have three bays for emergency service vehicles.

Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, Chairman of Norfolk County Council's Communities Committee, said:

"Crews have already been making good use of our new tower and full size drill yard which was created thanks to the changes made to the layout of the site. This vital space now means that we will be able to train much needed new recruits locally."

"Despite sadness after the loss of the former station thoughts quickly turned to ensuring the new base was bigger and better than the old one and it's wonderful to see that we now have something that suits the needs of the services both now and into the future."
