Too ugly to love?

Published by Chris Craddock at 1:15pm 9th August 2018.

It seems people are looking to adopt ‘cuter’ breeds of dogs and Norfolk could be taking the brunt.

We were one of the worst when it came to abandoning animals last year.

Our County was the fifth highest in the South East in terms of the number of animals rescued by the RSPCA.

A survey by dogsblog.com has found Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Akitas and Greyhounds are the most common breed to be abandoned across the UK.

It's claimed some dogs are being dumped in shelters because they're 'too ugly' for Instagram and Twitter.

Amy Ockelford from the RSPCA said:

"This isn't surprising at all. It's something that we've been seeing for a long time at the RSPCA.

"Unfortunately there has been a huge surge in popularity for certain breeds of dogs like designer dogs, handbag dogs but also the designer cross breeds.

"It's led to two issues. It's led to a massive surge in unscrupulous breeders breeding dogs in appalling conditions so that they can fill this gap in the market.

"It also means that other types of dog have been left to the wayside and we know from the dogs that are coming into our centres and the dogs that take longer to rehome, that there are certain types of dogs who, unfortunately, seem to be considered less desirable by a lot of people who use social media and who see celebrities with types of dogs that they then want to recreate".
