Making the impossible choice in Norfolk

Making the impossible choice in Norfolk

It's a choice none of us should have to make: to eat or be clean.

25% of children in West Norfolk live in poverty.

Too many families are unable to afford basic items like shampoo, soap and tampons.

But the Hygiene Bank really want to stop this from happening.

Found erLizzy Hall told KLFM:

"Clean teeth, hair and body shouldn't be a privilege.

These things impact our self-esteem, our self-confidence and our dignity. "

She said to us period and hygiene poverty  can mean people have to take drastic action:

"People are either stuck at home or they're rolling up toilet paper or they're stuffing socks down their pants and that's just from a lack of affordability.

One of the food banks we support said that their clients regularly brush their teeth with their finger, salt and soap."

The charity opened two drop off points for donations in King's Lynn in November 2018 (Wilko in the High Street and Tesco in Gaywood).

Now they have two more:

  • The Body Shop (King's Lynn High Street)
  • Ring Associates - Walk-In advice centre (King's Lynn High Street)

The Hygiene Bank also have a new campaign #itsinthebag.

As part of this project, they have designed a reusable bag that lives in your home.

You gradually fill it with new and unused hygiene essentials, beauty and personal care products, then simply take it and empty it out at your local hygiene bank drop off point.
