Wisbech High Street closure set to continue

Wisbech High Street closure set to continue

The road closure on Wisbech High Street is being extended for emergency repairs.

More structural issues at the derelict building at 11-12 High Street means it's staying shut for an extra five or six days.

Fenland District Council started the emergency works to demolish the property on Monday (15th July).

Work will be carried out over the weekend to make sure the road is reopened as soon and as safely as possible.

Cllr Chris Seaton, Fenland District Council's Portfolio Holder for Heritage, said:

"These works are being undertaken to ensure the continued safety of both the public and our contractors.

"We appreciate the public's patience during this time."

The council bought the building from its previous owner late last year to bring it back into use as part of its £1.9 million Heritage Lottery-funded Wisbech High Street Project.

Plans have been put forward to build new flats and shops on the site.

It was during the initial excavation work in the building's basement last week when when the structural issues were found.
