He was the favourite from the beginning.

And now Boris Johnson is Prime Minister and Leader of the Tory Party.

He beat Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt to the top job.

159,000 Tory members voted for who they wanted to replace Theresa May in No. 10.

Brexit, and their ability to deliver it, dominated both campaigns.

But it was Boris Johnson who came out victorious.

The reaction in West Norfolk

We spoke to North West Norfolk MP Sir Henry Bellingham about the news.

He was originally backing Dominic Raab but when he was eliminated Sir Henry decided it should Boris for the top job, and he thinks he's the right man to be PM:

"Yes he's going to face big challenges but I just think that he's going to be up for it.

He, after all, was a quite superb Mayor of London.

So I have every confidence that he will surround himself with really bright people, and he'll give us that bit of optimism that we need."

I W Sir Henry

Sir Henry also thinks that seeing Boris Johnson as Prime Minister could mean big things for fellow Tory, South West Norfolk MP Liz Truss who has supported the former Foreign Secretary from the start:

"She's [Liz Truss] been a crucial part of his campaign team.

And has also done a huge amount of work around the post Brexit narrative because if we're going to win the next election, it's not going to be enough to say hey look we've done Brexit aren't we clever?

The public will say actually that's why we elected you and you've made quite a meal of it, but what's your story around social care, around tax, around school funding, around knife crime and climate change?

I think Liz has been absolutely inspirational in nailing down some of those really important policies.

So I hope that by the end of the day we'll hear that Liz has got a really top appointment in Boris' government, I hope she does."

Liz Truss MP, who has been Boris Johnson’s Director of Policy during the leadership campaign, commented

"Congratulations to Boris Johnson; from Wednesday the United Kingdom will have a new prime minister who has the drive and energy to deliver Brexit, to ensure a successful and dynamic Britain."
