Could you walk 100 kilometres non stop?

Well that's what one Breckland Council staff member is taking on this month - all to raise money for the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

Richard Wills is the managing director of Breckland training services and he's attempting the infamous Trailwalker Challenge on the 21st of September with three friends.

The endurance event challenges teams of up to four people to walk, jog or run 100km non-stop across the South Downs Way, near Portsmouth, in under 30 hours.

The sponsorships the participants collect ensures Gurkha veterans, their widows and their wider communities are able to live with dignity in their home-country of Nepal.

The South Downs Way is notoriously hilly, so how is Richard training in Norfolk - one of the flattest counties in the UK?

"I'm finding as many hills as I possibly can. Funnily enough the coast is pretty much the only place you can find them.

"I'm doing short bursts, something like 30 or 40 kilometre bursts which in itself takes an entire day. I'm doing those maybe once a week but it's impossible to train a one hit 100km walk."

His motivation as he conquers the challenge will come from the Gurkhas that are stationed at the checkpoints.

"One thing I really love about the challenge is that the Gurkhas themselves are taking care of logistics for the event and I think that's motivation in itself, to see those few guys every few checkpoints.

"At the end of the challenge as well the Gurkhas put on what is their very famous Gurkha curry! I think after 100km...I'm not too sure if a hot spicy curry is what I'll be waiting for but it's things like that are really going to make it exciting and going to make it feel worthwhile.

Richard Wills Trailwalker challenge

This isn't the first challenge Richard has done. He took on the Three Peaks Challenge in 2014:

"I always think it's always good to find something in life each day that really challenges you and whilst I wouldn't want to be doing one of these every day of my life, it's something that jut ignites the passion, lights the fire in my belly to get up and go for something."
