Have you ever felt lonely in West Norfolk?

It seems you're not the only one.

Age UK have released an interactive map outlining where older people are most and least likely to feel this way.

Several areas of our county have been ranked as very high risk for loneliness.

They include:

    • Emneth and Outwell
    • Tilney St Lawrence
    • Gaywood
    • North, South and West Lynn
    • Heacham
    • Clenchwarton

According to Age UK:

  • 3.6 million older people in the UK live alone.
  • 1.9 million people often feel ignored or invisible.
  • Loneliness can be as harmful for our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

King's Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council also manages the Lily Trust, a service that provides a comprehensive range of support in West Norfolk to combat loneliness and social isolation in adults of all ages.

The project is linked to the 'No Lonely Day' initiative, and encourages our residents to develop friendships and engage in their local communities.

The service is aimed at everyone over the ages of 18 and you can find more details here.

How you can help:

  • Be there- let the person know that you're there for them. Ask them how they're feeling and offer your help and support. Just having someone listen to them can make a big difference.
  • Encourage them to get help- reassure them that it's possible for things to get better if they get the right help. They may need your help to meet new people or to find services that can support them
  • Be patient- Feeling lonely can often lead to irritability and feeling misunderstood, gently assurance is often needed.
