It's now even easier to help save the planet in Wisbech.

The Town Council has agreed to join the refill revolution.

The scheme works by signing up businesses in the town to agree to display a scheme sticker and to refill a plastic bottle with tap water on request.

In return they are able to upload details of their business to the scheme's App, this will give them free advertising, increase footfall to their business with the potential for increased sales and be seen to be environmentally friendly.

Anyone can download the App so when visiting a town they can see at a glance which businesses are part of the scheme.

By doing this they can stay hydrated, save money and help the environment by reducing single use plastic (SUP) waste.

Why is this important?

  • In the UK over 7.5 billion SUP water bottles are bought each year.
  • 15 million SUP bottles are littered, landfilled or incinerated every day.
  • The average person in the UK uses 3 SUP water bottles each week.
  • Globally 1 million SUP bottles are bought every minute, a figure expected to grow by 20% in the next two years.

This scheme aims to cut SUP waste which should benefit the environment by:-

  • Reducing the number of SUP bottles that need to be produced.
  • Reduce littering, landfill and incineration.
  • Reduce UK waste being exported, thus reducing the waste's carbon footprint.
  • Nationally at the moment, there are over 20,000 refill stations (including plenty in King's Lynn and Hunstanton)
  • If 10% of the UK population refilled a bottle just once a week 340 million SUP bottles would not be needed.
  • If each refill station was used twice a day, 14 million fewer SUP bottles would not be needed.

The Wisbech scheme will be officially opened by the Mayor, Councillor Mike Hill, on Thursday 5th September at 11 a.m.
