They've had 1,000 prickly patients this year alone.

And the 300 odd hedgehogs being cared for at the RSPCA East Winch are getting through 100 tins of dog food a day.

The charity is hoping animal lovers will donate tins of dog food.

Alison Charles, manager at the Norfolk wildlife centre said

"Hedgehogs are one of the nation's favourite wild animals and so we hope people might answer our plea and perhaps pick up a few tins of dog food during their Christmas food shop and donate them to us or visit our Amazon wishlist.

We went and counted the other day how many tins we were using to feed them and we were a bit shell-shocked at how many they are getting through. Even though they are small mammals, when you have 300 plus extra mouths to feed, it's inevitable that you are going to get through a lot of food!"

Hedgehogs are the number one species admitted to the centre and over 23,000 hedgehogs have been cared for since 1992.

If you find a sick hedgehog in the daytime, we would advise animal lovers to please give it warmth - a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel is ideal - and offer it pet food or scrambled egg straight away and bring them to the centre. If a hedgehog gets too cold, their chances of recovery reduces.

Healthy hedgehogs weighing over 500g should be left alone, but you can still provide supplementary food for them. If the weather is mild hedgehogs will naturally gain weight for hibernation and will be foraging for food overnight.

This is where the public can help - staff advise that you put a bowl of dog or cat food (not fish-based) out in your garden and help them gain weight for when the weather is cold enough for them to hibernate.

Hedgehogs often wake up during hibernation when it is mild weather, forage for food and then go back to sleep once the temperature drops again.
