West Norfolk is pulling together to support a country thousands of miles away.

Wildfires have raged for months in Australia, an area the size of South Korea has now been destroyed.

Peta Steel lives in Hunstanton but spent most of her life in Australia and she told KLFM it's terrible to watch while so far away but also how she's trying to help.

"I've spent many mornings and nights reading things and just in tears and feeling totally helpless.

It's devastating.

Every morning I wake up and I look at Facebook or I read the news reports and I've definitely got some personal friends who have been affected."

24 people are known to have lost their lives and hundreds of homes have been destroyed.

Experts say almost half a billion animals have perished in the bushfires, which are among the worst the country has ever seen.

Thousands of animals have been injured by the flames and are now being cared for by charities.

Those who have survived the devastating fire now need comfy, snuggly new homes.

That's how Peta is trying to help by sewing pouches for them to recover in.

Peta appealed on Facebook for donations of fabric and was amazed at the response from locals.

"I don't know any other Australians living in Hunstanton.

So to be in another country, halfway around the world and to feel all the locals love and support it's mind blowing and absolutely amazing.

It's a pretty special feeling"

Sewers and knitters can make pouches and wraps that can be made into joey pouches, koala mittens and bat wraps.

It's part of an international movement by The Animal Rescue Craft Guild.

The material has to be 100% natural fibres e.g cotton, bamboo, linen or blends of these as many on the animals have severe burns.

  • Sewers: Joey pouches, hanging joey pouches, bat wraps, quilts and blankets. (No hand-sewn items.)
  • Crocheters: Birds nests, blankets, joey pouch outers, animal jumpers.
  • Knitters: Blankets, joey pouch outers, animal jumpers.
