Miscarriage can lead to 'long-term post-traumatic stress'

There are calls to treat the emotional health of women who've experienced a miscarriage with as much importance as physical health.

Research has found almost a third of people suffered post-traumatic stress in the month afterwards.

Scientists at Imperial College London and KU Leuven in Belgium spoke to 653 women who had experienced early pregnancy loss.

With 24% saying they experienced moderate to severe anxiety and 11% saying they experienced moderate to severe depression.

Sadly over 5,600 babies are stillborn or die shortly after birth every year in the UK, which amounts to over 100 every week.

A large number of miscarriages go unreported as many can be dealt with at home so there is no clear number of how many occur every year.

Sarah Chapman's daughter Eliza was born sleeping in 2018 and Verity Gamble was 40 weeks and two days into her pregnancy when she received the devastating news that her baby, Summer Ashley, had passed away.,

They told KLFM that speaking to other parents who have gone through similar experiences can be very helpful:

"There's nothing like talking to another bereaved parent where they fully understand that pain your carry with you every single day.

Miscarriage might be something you suffer with silently, maybe you haven't told anybody yet, just your partner knows.

So a lot of time I do feel women who have experienced miscarriage are carrying that on their own."

Verity says the pain of losing a child stays with you:

As soon as you've done that pregnancy test and it's positive, you've got a baby in you and you're planning, you're thinking about the future.

"Once you have lost your baby, you haven't just lost your baby then, you feel like you've lost your future too.

We've had people message us who lost their baby 15 years ago and they've lost that whole 15 years and they're still experiencing that loss."

Whispers from Wings is an informal support group that provides a safe space for parents who have lost a child no matter at what age or how long ago.

The group will meet every first Tuesday of the month.
