72-year-old Stewart South from Blackborough End will be taking on the Virgin Money London Marathon later this year for a very special cause.

Both of his sons suffer from kidney failure and have had transplants - with Stewart even donating his OWN kidney to his youngest son.

Stewart's done seven marathons already - and this will be his third in London.

It's also an important fundraising milestone for Stewart, who's raised £20k for kidney research in the past twenty years.

Stewart told KL.FM he just feels lucky to even get a place:

"I'm running for Kidney Research UK because both my sons have had kidney transplants.

"In fact I donated one to our younger son in 1999 and that was really when I started to think about how I could do some sort of payback to fundraise for charity."

Three million people in the UK suffer from kidney disease, and Stewart wants to help them.

"Most of the money I've raised has been for Kidney Research UK because we suffered trauma when our family were diagnosed with kidney failure - so anything they can do to put money into research to try and find a cure for kidney much the better.

When his sons were first diagnosed, Stewart didn't realise it ran in the family.

Further tests showed his wife was a carrier for a genetic defect which shows in sons.

Stewart will be running the marathon with his son Oliver's girlfriend Hayley Smith and Joel's sister-in-law Niki Reeves.

He told KL.FM his sons don't let it affect them too much.

"They do get some side effects from the medication but they do live ordinary normal lives - you wouldn't know if you met them that there was any sort of problem."
