Anyone needing a face mask will be able to get one for free in Downham Market.

The town council has started an initiative for local people to sew masks to give to key workers and anyone who wants one.

It means any sewers in the area are teaming up to make face masks

The council is offering the masks for free for anyone who wants one in Downham Market, although they have warned they're not suitable for any children under the age of two.

While the masks are not surgical grade, they do offer approximately 75% protection against COVID-19 droplets.

They're also providing scrubs bags for NHS workers, so they can safely transport and clean their uniforms after shifts.

Elaine Oliver, clerk of the Downham Market Town Council, said:

"Some people are saying 'I'm a key worker', 'I've got to go into a school', or 'my husband's a delivery driver. Apparently you can't get any masks for love nor money from what I gather.

"So it's just completely varied of who wants them and who needs them.

"It started off small and it's got bigger and bigger. It's actually quite moving. Some of the people are so grateful. It really does move you when you read through the messages saying 'what can we do to help?' or 'thank you for what you're doing, it's amazing.

"And we just feel as a town council, we're doing exactly what we should be doing."

Anyone who wants a mask is asked to get in touch with the council by calling 07747 828683 or by emailing masksDMTC@gmail.com, giving their name, address, phone number and the number of masks that are needed and if you're for adults or children.

A JustGiving page has also been set up to help raise funds towards buying more materials for the masks.
